As of April 2022, obtaining a UEI (Unique Entity Identifier) is part of the registration process in SAM (System for Award Management). SAM automatically generates and assigns a UEI to entities during their SAM registration or renewal. You do not need to apply for a UEI separately; it is integrated into the SAM registration process.
Here’s how the process works:
- Initiate SAM Registration: If you are registering in SAM for the first time or renewing an existing registration, follow the steps to initiate your SAM registration. You can do this by creating a SAM user account or logging in to your existing account.
- Complete the SAM Registration: During the SAM registration process, you will provide essential information about your organization, such as your Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN), legal business name, financial details, ownership information, and other relevant data. SAM will guide you through the registration forms.
- UEI Assignment: As you progress through the registration, SAM will generate and assign a UEI to your entity as part of the process. This UEI will replace the former Data Universal Numbering System (D-U-N-S) number that was used for identification purposes.
- Review and Certification: After completing your registration and verifying the information you’ve provided, you will be required to review and certify the accuracy of your registration details.
- Submission: Once you’ve reviewed and certified your registration, you can submit it to SAM. You will receive a confirmation of submission.
- Processing and Activation: SAM will process your registration, which may take some time. Your registration will become active once this processing is complete.
- Annual Renewal: Remember that SAM registrations must be renewed annually to remain active. Be sure to renew your registration before the expiration date to maintain eligibility for federal contracts and grants.
- Use Your UEI: Once your SAM registration is active, you can use your assigned UEI for federal contracting, grant applications, and other interactions with the U.S. federal government.
It’s important to keep your SAM registration information accurate and up to date, including your UEI. Changes to your entity’s information, ownership, or legal status should be promptly updated in SAM to ensure continued eligibility for federal opportunities.
In summary, obtaining a UEI is an integral part of the SAM registration process, and SAM assigns it automatically as you complete your registration or renewal. There is no separate application or request process for a UEI.
